Birth

Birth
A great adventure opening up
Filled with promises and threats
"Why would you want to to bring a new life into a world like this?"
Such danger!
Such hopelessness!
What does a mother do?
Do mothers only see dangers?
Do mothers see the possibilities of one life?
Every baby is born with possibilities.
Mothers and fathers need imaginations
They can imagine the great life their child will lead.
They can imagine the impact their child will have on the world.
Every child has that possibility.
That is why they are born.

Beyond the ice

Worth thinking about what I wrote about back in January. Interesting to consider what happens when thoughts get committed in writing and then acted upon. Adventure sounds great and risk is good writing material. I find it then hard when the risks impact on others. For me to experience the uncertainty of the new and unknown is one thing. To involve others, even when it is their choice, feels a lot different. I like to encourage with positive words and optimistic forecasts but I feel nervous about… Continue

Thin ice

I have started to realise how easy it is to live a 'safe' life. I have a couple of shelves of biographies and I don't think any of those people have opted for safety. That is a very simple comparison. Safety and nothing to write about. Danger and a life worth recording. The heroes I read about didn't start out with any promises or any guarantee of success. In fact, many of them had influential people telling what they couldn't do. Lots of discouragement. They chose to risk failure and often a lo… Continue

Creativity

Learnt a lot about creativity this week. It's good to be creative about creativity and not adopt a narrow definition. In fact, a lot of 'creativity' isn't because it is more like artistic imitation. A friend has the most creative ways to encourage people I know. She has a whole range of cards, flowers, food, words, helpful things that she uses according to the person and their circumstances. It works every time. That's creativity!

Adventure

I am brand new at connecting in this way. I love connecting so I am looking forward to the learning that is going to take place and the opportunities to hear ideas and get to know people. I already know some people in M and I hope I can find them!

Hi Rob,
Very cool that you and Julia are chatting - so exciting. Not such a big world after all huh? So awesome.
We are home from Europe and had such a great, great time. Our team did brilliant and served with all of their hearts and were blessed by getting to know some very neat families that live for moving the Kingdom - it was an amazing time. I'm excited to see how our team moves forward to mark human history.

Rob, Thanks much for your message. I'm excited about my next book about a Hollywood church and it will come out by August 2008. Places like amazon.com will have it listed by spring of next year. Best, Gerardo

Hi Rob , no worries about the delay. Things are a bit hectic around here too, I'm leaving this coming Wednesday with a team going to Austria and Hungary for about 11 days. My wife and two daughters are coming too so it is shaping up to be quite the family adventure, as well as all the team logistics, etc.
Love to continue the dialog as well. You mentioned community college and lots of international students - off the top of my head, here are a few ideas to chew on:

- free english classes for internationals [I find American kids have no idea how valuable knowing English is]
- the idea of a culture exchange [common elements we all have like music, food, recreation, etc. and sharing how each of those is different in cultures]
- shared service project [maybe fixing up an older park or some central place in the community]

We definitely have lots of energy and ideas! Let's keep chatting - fun stuff!

ps - did you and my friend J ever connect?

Although it's not in the same league; as I open myself up to become more Christlike each day, I also strive to more Weckl-like each day. That sounds like heresy in writing, not meant to be. While we were evacuated from New Orleans I worked with a guy from Adalaide at a winery in Colorado. I heard lots of great stories about Southern Australia. Welcome to M.

Holiness and Risk

A few hours after touching down back in Scotland from The International Mentoring Network’s Immersion experience in Orlando, I found myself in a conversation about a Methodist Church initiative called Holiness and Risk.

Is it okay if I tell you a little about this? It’s a really intriguing kind of thing that can emerge [...]

Tomorrow and How to Get There – The Futuristic

Tomorrow.  Face it with either fear or anticipation, it doesn’t matter which, it is coming regardless of our grasp of it.  Fortunes have been made marketing knowledge about tomorrow whether that tomorrow is 24 hours away or 100 years distant.

Fortune tellers make the promise that that can allay our fears with their prognostication [...]

Communities of Knowing

In his book, The Message in the Bottle, Walker Percy tells the fictional story of a train that hurried through the countryside. The commuters on board saw the passing scenery as little more than a two-dimensional background rolling past their windows.

One day, though, the train breaks down and the commuters have to disembark by a [...]
