Wow, you guys are exploring interesting territory. Sorry I dropped out for a while: tax season comes early for small businesses. Brandon, if you don't mind me returning to the last reply you made to me, I want to address at least one of your points…

I think the "free will" and "rational choice" argument is a bit of a straw man. Our will is bent by sin, and our rationality by rationalizations... but not in a clean, uncluttered abstract way that will eventually be worn down by the relentless and…

Hey, thanks for the thoughtful answer to my first question! Like you, I don't pretend to be an expert in these matters, but about the Thomas Talbott quote. ""No one rational enough to qualify as a free moral agent could possibly prefer an objective…

And how do Parry and Partridge go about doing that? What is the strongest part of their argument? I'd especially like to hear Brandon's opinion on this, since he is our host on this thread, but from this conversation so far, I am able to glean that…

Amen to that, Dean. And I add my thanks to his, Jack.

You are right, of course. I also have Input and Connectedness (and Strategic, Positivity, Activator and enough Relator to show up once). I imagine that having Input as one of my top 3 is one source of my "conversational stamina"-- I'm delighted to…

Yep, I am strong in Ideation. I truly love ideas and discussing them with others, but it is kind of a lonely theme to have. Most people don't seem to have the stamina to stay focused on one idea for more than maybe three "exchanges" (you say somethi…

Success weighs more heavily on a person than I expected

After several (um, six?) years, my freelance tutoring & editing business is starting to "succeed". I am making more money than ever before, almost reaching my income goal to cover all my family's basic expenses plus tucking a little away for the future (what a thought, eh? Everyone ought to try it). But goodness, it turns out to be...

1. ...a lot of work! Yes, having lots of work means just that. But somehow I imagined that the exhilaration of being hired for so many hours per week would gi… Continue

Diary of an Urban House

As a matter of fact, I do blog. Just not here, not very often anyway.

Come over to my home where you can hear and see my life a bit better:
DiaryofanUrbanHouse.com

Or visit my occasional canvas of the soul at parepidemos.voxtropolis.com

Over the next couple of months I expect I'll be able to make a whole lotta "private" posts public, dating back more than a year. If things seem slow or spotty when you visit either of those blogs, give it another month and then drop in again.

However, my expe… Continue

Worship and Mission

So, I'm supposed to be writing a paper about missional worship, worshipful mission, and the connections between worship and mission in church history. The problem is that it is like writing a paper about the joy of having opposable thumbs: I simply assume that worship and mission are intimately connected, that they are two sides of the same coin.

In fact, it is the inherent codependence of these two things that forced Jesus to give two "Greatest Commandments"-- worship, and mission-- i… Continue

Pinned down by heavy fire

Heavy barrage has pinned me down since February. Some hope of respite next week, perhaps some blog time, and then I'm expecting fierce fighting till end of August. Possible sanctuary for a week on Catalina Island in late July.

Hope you'll hear from me soon.

Nic,

I'll respond to you question about my blog entry more tomorrow. However, I feel kinda pumped up that a writing instructor would call that entry "glorious" - I'll take it man! However, I won't take the glory - you know and I know whence it came! :-)

I am writing something that maybe you could give me some advice on. I am attempting a book called - "Trees of Life Dude!". I'll explain more later. :-)

Talk at ya more tomorrow!

Holiness and Risk

A few hours after touching down back in Scotland from The International Mentoring Network’s Immersion experience in Orlando, I found myself in a conversation about a Methodist Church initiative called Holiness and Risk.

Is it okay if I tell you a little about this? It’s a really intriguing kind of thing that can emerge [...]

Tomorrow and How to Get There – The Futuristic

Tomorrow.  Face it with either fear or anticipation, it doesn’t matter which, it is coming regardless of our grasp of it.  Fortunes have been made marketing knowledge about tomorrow whether that tomorrow is 24 hours away or 100 years distant.

Fortune tellers make the promise that that can allay our fears with their prognostication [...]

Communities of Knowing

In his book, The Message in the Bottle, Walker Percy tells the fictional story of a train that hurried through the countryside. The commuters on board saw the passing scenery as little more than a two-dimensional background rolling past their windows.

One day, though, the train breaks down and the commuters have to disembark by a [...]
