That's not so much an excuse, but more a challenge!

Is what you're leading a tribe or factory?

Reply to This

The tribe can easily become a factory when what we do and how we do it becomes more important that the mission or goal.

I think you're right...most of the factories started as tribes. Denominations began as movements. Churches began as missions. It seems the natural way of human beings is to begin to codify what was once unspoken, and to solidify what was once fluid.

Keith and Eric, How would we know if we had a factory or a tribe? If you have a late adapting and very cautious leader, he may feel like his very slow moving factory is going too fast.

I think the question is not, how do we know; but, do we care to lead a tribe or manage a factory? Some may WANT to manage a factory; they must realize that this is different and will have different outcomes than leading a tribe.

excellent. nice reframing of the question.

I think that's right on, Eric. If you want to lead a tribe, and find yourself in a factory, you're going to always be frustrated at the lack of creativity and innovation. If you want to lead a factory and find yourself in a tribe, you're going to be driven crazy by the inefficiency and apparent un-manageability (I think I just created a word...) of the people in the tribe.

Yep. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

I think it has to do with attitude and mindset. When the focus shifts from mission to maintenance, then you've killed the movement. It's what I see in my particular denomination. Ironically they make a big deal of the fact that they are a "fellowship of churches", which is how they started, but they're as much a denomination as anything else.

yes, when we try to figure out how to maintain the mission we need to re-missionize.

Hey, another new word....re-missionize :) I like it.

Holiness and Risk

A few hours after touching down back in Scotland from The International Mentoring Network’s Immersion experience in Orlando, I found myself in a conversation about a Methodist Church initiative called Holiness and Risk.

Is it okay if I tell you a little about this? It’s a really intriguing kind of thing that can emerge [...]

Tomorrow and How to Get There – The Futuristic

Tomorrow.  Face it with either fear or anticipation, it doesn’t matter which, it is coming regardless of our grasp of it.  Fortunes have been made marketing knowledge about tomorrow whether that tomorrow is 24 hours away or 100 years distant.

Fortune tellers make the promise that that can allay our fears with their prognostication [...]

Communities of Knowing

In his book, The Message in the Bottle, Walker Percy tells the fictional story of a train that hurried through the countryside. The commuters on board saw the passing scenery as little more than a two-dimensional background rolling past their windows.

One day, though, the train breaks down and the commuters have to disembark by a [...]
