Super Powers -- Empathy
Today, on the Super Powers Center, Alex McManus and I will be hosting a discussion on the Gallup StrengthsFinder talent theme of Empathy.
If you have this talent theme you have a special knack for understanding what those around you are feeling. Like a mathematician who is able to assess complex formulas to arrive at the answer to the equation, you have similar skill when it comes to assessing the emotional response that people have as a result of their surroundings. The factors that affect people's environment are varied and include physical factors, relational dynamics, and stresses that may bearing on an individual.
Don't confuse this with sympathy. Sympathy implies support for or agreement with the person in question. While this may or may not be present empathy refers strictly to the deep level of understanding with other people's feelings whether or not you agree with or support them.
