I could memorized the Harry Potter books, word for word, and decided to start telling people that the stories within it were actually real, authentic, and had taken place, but, would that really make it true? I am sure there are several avid Harry Potter fans who actually have the books memorized, or would be willing to do so, and believe they were books of truth. (Honestly, I don't even like them, and no, I wouldn't in real life memorize them.) Hypothetically speaking though, several people could memorize the first book, and J.K. Rowling's writtings would be preserved forever, and they could proclaim it as a book of truth.

Just becuase something has been memorized by several thousand, no wait, "millions," of people, does not prove it to be true.; ▶ Reply to This

Before the printing press, it was very difficult to copy any text perfectly over a long period of time. Among rabbinic Jews, the Masoretic families (Ben Asher and Ben Naphtali) did a great job of copying their received text of the Hebrew Bible, but variants remain.; ▶ Reply to This

Permalink Reply by Brian Russell on May 24, 2007 at 6:31pm: Some of the Bible may have been produced orally but it is clear from the testimony within even the OT that much of it was produced as written material from the get go.

By the time that we get to the NT, all of the Epistles existed from the beginning as literature. The four Gospels and Acts were produced as documents (this is not to say that oral sources were not used in their production).

I am not about to argue against the importance of memory. I agree with tne sentiments of the Muslim as well as those expressed elsewhere in this conversation thread (and in the Bible itself) that Scripture ought to be internalized.

I know persons Jewish and Christian alike who can still quote from memory massive chunks of the Bible in its original languages.

I have heard N.T. Wright, who is probably the best well known NT scholar today, lecture and quote long portions of Paul from memory in Greek. There is something profound and important about having a reservoir of Scripture internalized.; ▶ Reply to This

It does change - that is what makes it culturally relevant or event relevant or life circumstance relevant - no? However, even in the "True Religion" world - it is all subjective to intepretation - no?
Most of the changes you have seen in the bible were culturally driven, for instance "The Message" for ease of reading and intent. It is many of the whackos and their interpretation that messes things up. Anyway.., that's my story and Ima stickin toit!

A great example of this is my experience in Jamaica a few years ago. We went to 9 Mile which is where Mr. Bob Marley is actually buried. As I walked around I saw bibles all around, many open to pages that seemed to be significant. So.., I asked the guide about this. He stated that Bob's grandmother had a huge influence on him, and that Bob felt that the bible was a good way to live life. Many of his songs are rife with snippets of scripture. However, he was also a believer in Hali Salasi too - no? So..., what is truth in his eyes? Can you believe in two masters? Did Jesus lie about himself, and Mr. Salasi and Mohammed follow in his footsteps to be the new Messiahs? I personally don't think so.., but obviously in many eyes this is truth? So.., like Pontius Pilate stated to Jesus - "What is truth?" So..., big breath - what's the point?

The point is that from the beginning of time, the enemy (Snake in the Garden) has been about deception of the truth. Much of what we see are shades of the truth mixed with a little or a whole lot of deceipt. This even happens in so-called "christian" circles too; all you have to do is look at Jim Jones in Guyana and David Koresh in Waco to see the extremes of that, but you see it coming from the pulpits of many churches today too.

So..., that is why I accepted the mission to "M" and the covert operation of Living Out the Kingdom of God on Earth as Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew. Cuz people will know us and see Jesus by our fruits and they will see truth come from the lips of those who truly Love People as God does (with Unconditional Love); and not in destroying them with words and bombs.

Permalink Reply by Michael Alexander McManus on May 24, 2007 at 1:23pm: im reading through the qur'an and that doesnt seem to be a problem, it interprets itself to culture too. the difference is they believe they have the original right there to interpret it from. ok so the bible is called the living word, does that mean there should be three or four versions all saying different things? no it should say the same thing, even interpreted by culture.; ▶ Reply to This
