EVENT DESCRIPTION

The HUMAN EVENT 09 is a unique, future-oriented experience designed to get your creative juices flowing.

H209 revolves around the idea of cultural engagement. Rather than ask how we can "do" church better, the IMN asks, How can we be the kinds of Christ followers and Christ following communities that Jesus needs to touch our 21st century world?

H209 will engage you in conversation around the idea that Christ followers can more effectively contribute towards creating a human future, a future that works for everybody. The highly interactive and conversational format will place your input, questions and interests front and centre.

We hope you will join IMN founder, Alex McManus, author of Making the World Human Again for this extraordinary opportunity.

Thanks for this, Dianne. It's a teasing question because it makes me wonder how we might go about life in a way that takes people way beyond crossing the line of faith. This will enrich our conversations.

Alex should now be in the UK and finding his way up to Sheffield. We are getting close. Roll on The Human Event.

sorry havent managed to get a question on line yet but have now looked at others' I think one of my questions is sort of similar to Sam's. It summarises as how do we see "results" but not make "results" our main focus? The different way of Christianity I have been introduced to in recent years is much more about the journey, seeing the kingdom of God in peoples lives now etc but I think there is still a line for each person to cross which is about their eternal destiny ( which I know starts here and now too) and I worry that if I move off "results" people may miss that? But I dont want to go back to my old way of living out my faith as this really makes more sense.

Thanks, Simon. That's a lot to chew on.

(you will have to forgive me here as this is my world i'm talking about... it might resonate with you it may not) Something i've been considering is just how sanitised our experiences our, what that looks like collectively for me is the erosion of the public space, the control of everyday life, health and safety, data protection, CRB checks and ultimately the erosion of trust, now as we all know trust is central to relationship and (we the chruch) bang on about relationship with christ, but if our life experiences (society outside the Jesus world I'm talking about now) are guided by fear (a learnt behaviour of mistrust) (financial crisis, terrorism, famine, global warming, mistrust of intention) to further put up barriers can society ever fully experience full relationship that is not exploitative, self demanding etc. I think what I'm trying to say is how can we create environments/communities that are condusive to Jesus experiences and therefore enable the spirt within to (sounds corny but) awaken.
Make of that what you will

Here's something I jotted down as a question after reading through those of others: How must we understand "church" to be a new kind of human existence, and what might this look like?"

This connects in with some of what has been mentioned, but it strikes me that there is way more to this than we presently can imagine.

Pete, the question that comes to my mind is "how can a way of life be distinct from a system of beliefs?" and, if it can, "is this desirable?" Is it "beliefs" that are the problem or the "systematization" of beliefs? Would not we want to life an integrated life where our system of beliefs and our ways of life complement each other synergistically?

Thanks for priming the pump of ideas.

Thanks for your question, Pete, Angela, and Sam. Feel free to continue to add ideas. Hopefully, we'll hear from others too.

The HUMAN Event conversation is less than one month away. This is your chance to help shape the event.

What are the hot topics you'd like to hear discussed?
What are the questions you're asking?
What are the answers you're questioning?

Your replies so far as as follows...

PETE SHEPHERD
Thanks for the email. One of the questions buzzing within me that I'm hoping The Human Event will help me explore is this............what does it mean to express faith as a way of life rather than as a system of belief?

Looking forward to the conversation very much. Not long to go.

ANGELA DOBBINS
How can we inspire and motivate others, to catch the vision for God's mission that burns within us?

In what direction/ avenue can we reach the young - when I don't speak their language and I'm unconnected to their culture?

In the established church so much emphasis is placed on structure, is there not a fluid alternative that would work?

And arising from a conversation with Geoffrey - In becoming fully human does our commitment ultimately mean we are destined to travel the road alone as Jesus did?

SAM RADFORD
Here's a question/thought I'm grappling with at the moment:

How do we be people who are genuinely seeking to influence and see people change through the person of Jesus without compromising friendship and being seen as only about 'converting people'?

Or, putting it another way,

How do we be people will love and befriend people regardless of whether they ever choose to follow Christ and yet still proactively seeking to influence towards an encounter with Jesus?

Also, what are the bare essentials necessary to make something a church as opposed to just any organisation or community? Stripped down to nothing but the non-negotiables, what would church look like? What are those non-negotiables?

And another: Alex, you talk a lot about Jesus coming to 'make the world human again', what does it mean though to be 'fully human'? What does this look like? Can you be fully human apart from Jesus?
